Climate Change
Climate change may change everything. Warming global temperatures will likely drive food and water shortages, destroy cities and infrastructure, cause violent conflict over diminishing resources, massive migration, more disease, species extinction, and ecosystems falling apart. These effects could cause the global economy to collapse, intensifying all the hardships. Billions of people could die, and the remainder would suffer.
Greenhouse gas emissions are still increasing due to our globally competitive economy - continuous economic growth and unchecked overconsumption. In this competition, countries and corporations disadvantage themselves in “going green.” The world has no system for managing this competition since existing international arrangements are voluntary, with no enforcement. A redesigned United Nations could maintain a system of organized economic sanctions and other tools to enforce agreements to make sure all countries do their fair share to save the climate and humanity.
Why is climate change an existential threat?

The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the world is on track to reach at least X.XX degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Scientists say we need to stay under 1.5°C (2.7°F). Right now, we're at 1.1°C/2°F. (1)
